Yeah, stuff is different now then in the old days - you went to school, college, and people would actually talk to each other, you could figure out quickly all the groups, cliques, who was with who, what parties or events they went to, etc. and you could eventually talk to them, be friendly, funny, etc. and they might accept you after they got used to you.
Now lots of people barely go to classes, they might meet just a few times, then keep in touch only on social media or on chat apps, you can go every single day to courses, but since lots of people are skipping classes, you have no idea about their social dynamics and what they do outside school, since you weren't invited in their online groups and they also barely saw you and judged you only on their first impression(usually how you look like).
