And even then, there would still be an insane amount of people. If there were 800 million people and the woman to man ratio was 1.5 to 1, life would be great for everyone.

The earth isn’t overpopulated because we can easily and are currently producing food for 12 billion people. Further, most of earths land is still empty and food insecurity isn’t a problem. The problem is that human life doesn’t really mean anything at all with the amount of people we currently have and to add insult to injury, the excess of men makes life difficult for everyone.

in terms of breakthroughs or like how OP put it life being great. tbh it was just a bunch of wars and diseases going around, obviously theres more differences between the 19th and 21th century then just purely population, but i would still say population still plays a major role or is atleast correlated with with general global stability
