Poker is basically just professional lying, guessing what idiots have in their hands, and trying not to spew your stack when some fish catches a two outer on the river. Whether you are playing with your boys in a basement or playinh videogames online at 3 AM, it's the exact same bullshit: either you actually hit your cards, or you bluff so hard people think you're genuinely retarded and fold out of pure fear.
Luck swings hard in the short term, but long-term results come entirely down to decision quality, position, and exploiting opponent tendencies.
2. Poker Hand Rankings
Before you play a single chip, you need to memorize the hand hierarchy from top to bottom. A standard 52 card deck ranks from Ace down to 2. Here is the exact ladder from strongest to weakest:
Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit.
Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the exact same suit (ex, 5-6-7-8-9 of spades).
Four of a Kind: Four cards of matching rank (ex, four 8s).
Full House: Three of a kind combined with a pair (ex, three Queens and two 4s).
Flush: Any five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.
Straight: Five consecutive cards of mixed suits.
Three of a Kind: Three cards of matching rank.
Two Pair: Two separate pairs in the same hand.
Pair: Two cards of matching rank.
High Card: If you miss everything else, your single highest card plays.
3. Understanding Table Actions
Every betting round gives you a few specific choices depending on what happened before you:
Check: Pass the action to the next player without betting anything (only allowed if nobody has bet yet in that round).
Bet: Put chips into the pot first during a round, forcing others to match or fold.
Call: Match an opponent's bet to stay in the hand.
Raise: Increase the size of an existing bet to put maximum pressure on the table.
Fold: Throw your cards away, forfeit any claim to the pot, and check out until the next deal.
4. How a Texas Hold'em Hand Flows
Texas Hold'em is the undisputed king of poker variants. Here is how a standard hand actually plays out from start to finish:
The Blinds: The two players to the left of the dealer button post mandatory forced bets (the small blind and big blind) to seed the pot.
The Pre Flop Deal: Everyone gets two private hole cards face down. The first betting round kicks off right here.
The Flop: The dealer drops three community cards face up in the middle of the table. Another round of betting takes place.
The Turn: A fourth community card hits the board. Players evaluate their drawing odds. Another betting round follows.
The River: The fifth and final community card is dealt. Last chance to bet, raise, or fold.
The Showdown: If two or more players are left standing after the river, everyone turns their cards over. The player who builds the best five ard combination using any mix of their two hole cards and the five community cards takes the pot.
