The image shown is an example of masseter training and the drastic affect it can have on the face.

This is what tiktok influencers call an 'increase in bone mass', but really, it's not, it's just masseter hypertrophy. This is because as you train your masseter muscles, they grow outwards. This causes the skin to pull tighter against the muscle, giving the face a leaner and more masculine look, which again, tiktok influencers confuse with bones.

It's important to do masseter training correctly, here are things you don't want:
  • Masseter asymmetry
  • Clicking in jaw
  • Chewing food unevenly
  • TMJ issues
Things you do want:
  • First noticeable progress one month in
  • Burn in the masseter muscle whilst training
  • Swollen masseters after training (aka masseter pump)

Mirin effort, but this is honestly just common sense, it is 2026

I’d advice against it, coming from someone with big masseters. It only looks good while clenching. Otherwise you look like a bloated chipmunk

I heard that you should only train them if theyre low set tho

actually, if u already have big masseters, then there's no point training them, otherwise u will look bloated and lose harmony

Flexing them in public does get me looks from tiktokcels, but I don’t swing that way.

when you clench u train temporalis and also masseters, in order to train the lower part you have to chew with incissors, the middle part with premolars and try to avoid molars when training them, since it also uses the temporalis muscle a lot

yeah low set masseter training can make ur face look boxy, avoid making ur face look wide is the main point
nah bro its the other way around, if theyre high set youll just be a bloat cell but if theyre low set youre chillin

that means ur doing it right, its called a masseter pump
It feels so brutal I always wish I never did it but I have notice it significantly looks better now when I clench. Narrow jaw was my issue and it fixed it. I’m also very lean so it helps, if you’re fat it’s prolly not a good idea to train them cuz you’ll look fatter

I trained them for like 2 years(3times a week with progressive overload, altough wasn't very consistent during this time) and they seem to not grow at all, I just said fuck it and I am chewing 1h daily now! I always get huge masseters pumps and my face looks way better pumped up, it's just a matter of time till they grow

there is no such thing as low set or high set but there is something called ramus that kinda has an effect on it, you can still train with high set if u use incissors

mfs will chew on mastic gum 24/7 just to end up with TMJ and also realize they had inward gonions and high set masseters the whole time

Bad advice, incissors aren't made for hard and long chewing and u will fuck them up long term! Most people who achived decent masseter gains always chewed on premolars/molars! And if temporalis gets too big, just do botox

yup, that is not advised at all, id recommend training them for a few sets 4x a week - thats the sweet spot. anything more is dangerous

best not to damage teeth, molars r the way to go

most people i saw gains on where chewing on incissors, sure can fuck ur teeth up but you just gotta be carefull when chewing, i dont want to risk big temporalis, also we might be from the same country silverhorse

What should i chew
three options, but please brush ur teeth twice a day to avoid enamel damage from training:

  • dont use anything, just clench
  • use a folded towel
  • use a jaw trainer

Few questions for anyone who wants to answer:

- How do i know if masseter is low or high set? And should i train it if I have inward gonions?
- Is the Jawliner good? After reading the thread's answers, should i put em on molar or incissors?
- I have to slowly chew/hold for reps or what? How many set and reps? Is it ok to do that everyday?

Do I use jaw trainers or just chew mastic gum?

Show me exemples of the guys who got gains from chewing on incissors! U can't properly train masseters without activating temporalis at all and when my masseters are close to failure temporalis starts to take over, so just stop there! It's the same when doing pull ups, ur forarems get tired first instead of ur back! I don't understand why u are scared of big temporalis, if masseters are big enough they won't be very noticeable and again if they are just do botox, don't tell me u are scared of botox too:lul: Also I am romanian

1. Here's the difference between high and low set masseters (click on the image if it's hard to see).

2. I wouldn't recommend using Jawliner because it creates artificial resistance, which is a bit dangerous. Either use mastic gum or just do clenching (free) - it's natural resistance.

3. You can either bite down hard for 30-40 seconds per set or chew slowly for a few reps per set. Experiment with it and find out whatever is most comfortable. Doing four sets four times a week is enough. Your aim is to feel a slight burn in the masseter muscle while training, as long as you feel that, you're doing it right. You should also have a masseter pump after each session.

Is the distinction between high set and low set the only factor that determines the effects of chewing say the Jawliner?
