in 2020 Mundo Deportivo leaked the burofax that Messi sent Barcelona in 2020 when he tried to leave the club by terminating his contract.
"Dear Mr Bartomeu,
"In accordance with the provisions of Clause 3.1. from the contract of November 25, 2017, I express to you my desire to terminate my contract as a professional player," the text reads.
"I know that the term of unilateral termination of the contract has expired, but this must be explained by the exceptional circumstances due to which the 2019/20 season was cancelled. (...)
"The season ended yesterday, without prejudice to the fact that it ended for us on August 15 upon returning to Barcelona after being eliminated from the Champions League on August 14.
"In any case, 10 days after the end of the season, in accordance with our agreement, which must be interpreted according to the exceptional circumstances of the season, I exercise my right to terminate the contract as mentioned above in effect from August 30, 2020."
Messi wanted to leave Barça in 2020, motivated by what the player described as "lies" told by Bartomeu, apart from the failure of his attempts to put together a squad capable of winning trophies. Barça had just lost 8-2 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Barca were always overspending, even before selling Neymar in 2017 for a record transfer fee of €222 million. When the pandemic hit and with it the drop in revenue, the expenses that included Messi's four-year, €550 million contract quickly became unaffordable.

Under Bartomeu, Messi sent a formal burofax request to the club asking to leave. That was after negotiations broke down over a new contract and amid the general decline of standards at Barcelona.
El Mundo have leaked a number of emails from that negotiation, with Diario AS detailing some of Messi’s demands.
-Contract until 2023 with the unilateral option to extend for Leo Messi.
-Fixed salary at a 20% reduction, recovering 20% over the following two seasons with 3% interest.
-A box at Camp Nou for the Messi and the Suarez families.
-In case of termination of the contract, payment of the deferred salary with interest.
-€10m signing bonus to be paid in 2023.
-Increase in salary if taxes are raised so that it does not affect his salary.
-Removal of his buy-out clause of €700m, lowering it to a symbolic amount of €10k.
-Renewal of Barcelona assistant Pepe Costa.
