Affected mostly by your social class, linguistic features, looks and pedigree.
Though... My being well groomed, dressing well, communicating with class, mixing with the right people and achieving real world results that are appreciated will help you with this tremendously. It also helps being "cultured" in the sciences and arts.
You don't need to act "posh" and disingenuous but having good general knowledge of the basic sciences and arts helps you strike up a lot of conversations. Be aware of how you act and always change yourself for the better too.
I forgot in what literature did I read this exactly, but some man theorized that our mannerism are mainly based of the amalgamation of the people we hang around with the most. Never let that consume you, be better. Too many people are jesters in this society, today. Never be that guy, the man with no originality or interesting traits.

This is pretty basic social stuff, but reiterating core concepts helps sometimes. Especially when said activity can be muddied with the curse of habit and comfort.
