I have multiple friends who are a victim of this, the middle-class curse may you call it, I was almost a victim of this, but I survived as I didn't have any extractions and learned about the issues involving extractions at age 13, nowadays, I only suffer a narrow palate and stunted craniofacial development thanks to braces, but I possessed significantly above average craniofacial development for a 12-year-old (the age in which I got braces), so I made it out halfway okay. However, my potential was still curved by a solid point or two, I feel for you man.

my upper palate isnt that narrow as i can fit my whole front to mid tongue on it only thing that is the issue is the inward angle of my back teeth which take up space so when i mew the back of my tongue touches my teeth

Fuck all dentists who extract premolars for braces had this done to me at 12 shit absolutely ruined my face and my made me recessed. I had a fucking above average face when I was a kid and after this shit im now a fucking asymmetric/flat face/recessed cell.

When I was a kid I hade some teeth crowding. It was just my bottom incisors and my upper canines were a little too high up. But my face was still really good. The weird thing is that before I was 12 I had these yearly checkups to see how my teeth were developing he asked if I wanted the braces immediately or if I wanted to wait and see how they're developing and if they'll correct themsleves. I did choose to wait and see but couldn't his dumbass have at least teached my parents to give me some tougher foods or about how important nose breathing is. They obviously wouldn't fix themselves. Anyways I thought that the braces would give me straighter teeth and not change my whole fucking headshape. I also didn't do research about since I was a kid and thought that it was a simple procedure, braces= straighter teeth-done and that dentists are total fucking idiots but I was wrong. I also wanted to get it over with back then instead of having to do it like 20 because I for some reason thought it would be embarassing to have it at that age. Anyways at 12 we went through with it and I got 4 premolar extractions and braces.

Fast forward a couple years my face just looks worse and worse. I thought maybe it's genetics/sleeping on my side or mouth breathing maybe. But there's obviously not a gene for having a recessed jaw, an underdeveloped maxilla plus an asymmetrical face. One time I just dove down the rabbithole of the extraction retraction mike mew and it all clicked. Obviously taking out 4 healthy teeth and retracting the other ones plus having a retainer for 2 years after that has big effect on the face. Even worse when your 12 and in peak puberty. You're literally forcing back the teeth on top of stopping the maxilla from growing since you're still in puberty. It's all based on pseudosicence from the 1950s to force straightening teeth as a quick fix. And I know a lot of people who had the same procedure and they're all recessed with the long face, hook nose look. It's obviously not a fucking coincidence. How can they do that to kids without even talking about some potential sideeffects, dude didn't even tell me that I would have a metal wire behind my bottom teeth for the rest of my fucking life? Or at least tell me that my palate would get smaller which is a fact that he could probably at least agree with. But yeah right youre supposed to be thankful for free healthcare fuck off.

The part that really fucks with me is looking at old pictures of myself and seeing how good I looked before this and realising that it wasn't my genes that fucked me it was a desicion that I took when I was 12 and clueless. My good looks, health, potentially good future love life and slaying teenage years all got took from me because of something that another human did to me.

I'm sorry man, this happened to me as well. In a pretty bad situation I think I don't even need to larp OSA and sleep apnea cuz I already have pretty bad quality sleep. Extraction + retraction basically prevented all of the growth I could have had. I remember my parents saying at least you're lucky you have parents to pay for your braces jfl... they were comparing me to friends who didn't even need them cuz they had good tongue posture their whole lives
