Getting a good tan isn’t just about lying in the sun all day. Some people tan fast, some don’t tan at all, and some end up red, uneven, or fading after two days. This guide is just about how to get a nice, clean tan with the sun, but also without it, because there are actually solid ways to get color that don’t involve roasting outside.

1 - Sun

Tanning in the sun is the basic way everyone starts. You go outside, you let your skin warm up, and the color builds little by little. Simple. And if you want your tan to come in smoother and a bit faster, there are a few products made specifically for that, creams and oils that help your skin pick up color without leaving you dry or patchy.
Here are five types of products actually meant for tanning:

Tanning oils with SPF
The classic. They give your skin that shiny look that grabs the sun, but still have some protection so you don’t burn instantly.

Tanning lotions (SPF or low SPF)
These are thicker than oils and good if you want an even tan without feeling greasy. They’re made to help your skin darken gradually.

Melanin-boosting creams
You put them on before going out. They use ingredients like tyrosine or carrot extract to help your skin tan faster.

After-sun tan extenders
Not for the sun itself, but they keep your skin hydrated and help the tan stay deeper and last longer.

Carrot or coconut tanning oils
Lightweight, give a warm glow on the skin outside, and help the color come in nicely as long as there’s some level of protection in them.

2 - Supplements

Some supplements can actually give your skin a tanned look over time, without sun. Beta-carotene, lycopene, astaxanthin, and similar nutrients gradually warm up your skin and enhance your undertone, giving a subtle golden glow. You can use them together, they stack nicely and most people see a difference after a few weeks. Here are all products :

Beta-carotene
Probably the most famous one. It helps your skin get that warm tone and supports melanin production. Works best when taken consistently.

Lycopene
Good for giving your skin a more even color and helping it handle the sun better. People often pair it with beta-carotene.

Astaxanthin
Super strong antioxidant. Helps your skin stay calm under the sun and keeps your tan from fading too fast.

Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Less talked about, but they help with skin tone and general sun resilience. They fit well with the others.

3 - Self-Tanning Products

Not everyone wants to spend hours in the sun, and some people just don’t tan naturally. Self-tanning products are the easiest way to get color without UV. They give a bronzed look instantly or gradually, depending on the formula, and you can control how deep the color gets.

Here are some types of self-tanning products that actually work:

Gradual tanning lotions
These build color slowly over a few days and are great for controlling how dark you get. They also keep skin hydrated.

Tanning mousses
Lightweight foams that spread easily and dry fast. They give a smooth, streak-free glow when applied properly.

Tanning oils
Some self-tanning oils combine color with a bit of shine. They’re perfect for a glossy, sun-kissed finish.

Tanning drops / serums
You can mix these with your regular moisturizer to customize the intensity. They’re subtle and perfect for fine-tuning your glow.

Face-specific tanners
Formulated for the delicate skin on your face. Usually lighter than body tanners and easier to blend with your natural tone.

4 - Tanning bed

Tanning beds are one of the fastest ways to get a deep, even tan, especially when sunlight isn’t available. They emit UV light that triggers melanin production in your skin, just like the sun does, but in a controlled, predictable environment. Many people use them to kickstart a tan before a trip or to maintain a glow during the winter months.

The main advantage is that you can build color evenly without worrying about weather or timing. However, tanning beds are not risk-free. Overexposure can lead to burns, dry skin, premature aging, and increased risk of skin cancer. Some people notice uneven color or irritation if they go too long or use them too frequently. Starting with short sessions and letting your skin adjust gradually is essential.

After each session, hydrating your skin is crucial because tanning beds dry it out faster than natural sunlight. A good moisturizer or after-tan lotion helps maintain an even, long-lasting glow. While they provide a fast, predictable tan, it’s important to use them responsibly and in moderation.

When used carefully, tanning beds can be a useful tool for maintaining color year-round, but the potential downsides should always be kept in mind to avoid damaging your skin.

5 - Melatonan 1 / 2

Quick disclaimer first: I’m not a doctor, just a guy on a forum sharing info. Take this with a grain of salt, do your own research, and don’t treat it as medical advice.

Melanotan 1 and 2 are peptides that people use to boost melanin production and get a darker, more even tan without as much sun exposure. They’re often talked about in tanning communities because they can give a fast, noticeable color change and sometimes even enhance skin undertones.
Melanotan 1 is usually injected and tends to produce a slower, steadier tan. People say it’s easier to control and has fewer side effects, but it’s less widely available and more expensive.
Melanotan 2 is more popular, often comes as a nasal spray or injection, and can produce quicker, deeper results. Some users report stronger effects on libido and appetite, which is a side effect rather than a benefit for tanning. It can also cause nausea, flushing, or other mild reactions.
In short:
Melanotan 1: slower, steadier tan, fewer side effects, more expensive, less available.
Melanotan 2: faster, deeper tan, more common, some extra side effects.

Here are all the method to use it :

Injectable
The most common method for both Melanotan 1 and 2. Usually provides steady, controllable results.

Nasal spray
Only available for Melanotan 2. Easier to use but tends to give slightly less predictable results.
