He either feared you (fear grimace) or he is compelled to use this as an insurance policy against you, i.e., fake show niceness to avoid confrontation. Most people who smile aren't exactly happy, they are either scared or want to avoid trouble.

Smiling is mostly fake, only LSD smiles are real.
Most times a person had smiled at you is because they were using a social tool or were scared (fear grimace).
Almost nobody in the modern scope of humans smile out of happiness to see you.
They smile either cuz they are using a fake social tactic to reduce upheaval or to show fear that they are not a threat to you, or both.
Most depressed people even smile more sometimes as a way to try and make themselves less depressed.
Know that these snakes deceive you, never join their ranks and show the truth of your internal essence.
Guys may also smile to other guys to try and psychologically manipulate them in to thinking they are your "bro" so they reduce infighting, or remain on top of the alpha ladder amongst you.
