I went through an existential crisis over the last year and started despairing about all the time I've put in to working out that hasn't had nearly the impact on dating I thought it would.
What I realized after some time was that if I looked at myself in the mirror and didn't see abs and a little muscle, I would be disgusted by myself. Now I understand what people mean when they say they workout for themselves.
