I wanted to know more about my roots, because whenever I asked my family about our roots they had no answer. A good example is the fact we believed to have no migration history, however, according to documents owned by the government, it said our family migrated some centuries ago from Jammu. We only found out in early 2024. I was actually relieved to see I didn't have any foreign ancestry. I've learned many interesting things. For example, I now know where my ancestors were from thousands of years ago. I also learned that unlike most South Asians, I don't have a Steppe Y-DNA haplogroup. Mine is still West Eurasian in origin, but they settled in modern-day Pakistan long before those Steppe invaders came into South Asia. Despite having no Steppe haplogroups, I do carry considerable Steppe ancestry. This comes from a female-mediated source, whereas for most South Asians it comes from a male-mediated source. Something else I discovered is that I'm not ethnically Punjabi. My family are just culturally Punjabi. I discovered all this by taking a DNA test. Oh, and I also discovered I have dry earwax (something associated with East Asians) which is linked to little to no body odor. No wonder I never needed a deodorant.

You can find out your paternal and maternal haplogroups. This way, you can see where they originate from. I didn't know anything either but now I can place my ancestors to where they lived 3,000+ years ago. I'd never have been able to know if I hadn't taken a test. You should take it too, you might learn something new about yourself.
