The Male Archetype Guide
I've spent way too long looking at this stuff, so here's the version fast.
The one thing that actually matters
People don't judge your face on its own. They see you for half a second and drop you in a box "oh, that guy" and everything after gets read through the box.
The spectrum
Everything runs on one axis: how masculine your features read. Soft on the left, rugged on the right.
Soft Boy → Pretty Boy → Robust Pretty Boy → Chad → Hyper Masculine → Ogre
Left end = younger, softer, safer, approachable. Right end = older, heavier, more imposing. Neither's better. They peak at different ages and say completely different things. Most guys naturally slide right as they age, the 19-year-old pretty boy becomes the 30-year-old Chad. That's a good thing, not a loss.
Rough peak ages: Soft Boy 15–20 · Pretty Boy 17–23 · Robust Pretty Boy 20–28 · Chad 23–38 · Hyper Masculine 30–50 · Ogre 35+.
Soft Boy
Lowest dimorphism, most youthful. Great skin, great hair, no beard, slim. Reads gentle and non-threatening.
K-Pop Idol — East Asian, lean, flawless skin, soft midface. Always clean-shaven. Slim tailored fits, high-contrast colors, hair as the centerpiece styled, often dyed, never messy. Grooming turned up to editorial level. Reads polished and aspirational, like he tries hard and it pays off.
Softboy — lean, soft features, often on the shorter side. Curtains or soft waves, clean-shaven, cozy oversized knits in muted tones. The coming-of-age-movie boyfriend. Ages the fastest of anything on this list, so it lives in a narrow window.
Academic — lean, soft, works with glasses. Neat low-maintenance hair, oxfords, fine knits, chinos, a good coat. Quality over flash. Reads smart and dependable — high trust, zero intimidation.
Pretty Boy
Still soft but with one or two masculine details that sharpen the face — better jaw, deeper eyes. Body's slim, not frail. Broadest, most universally liked band on here.
Prettyboy — you need genuinely good soft features, aesthetic eyes, full lips, great skin. Clean-shaven, healthy voluminous hair, slim fits, immaculate grooming. Lives or dies on the grooming. The plain "he's just pretty" reaction.
Skater — good soft features, lean, works with edge. Loose thrifted streetwear, darker palette, clean-shaven, maybe some jewelry.
Surfer — European coloring, tan, lean-athletic. Long tousled hair, shell necklace, board shorts, faded tees. Everything screams beach. Warm, fun, no drama, but location-dependent.
Robust Pretty Boy
The pretty boy who added muscle and bone without losing the pretty. Real V-taper, some athleticism, face still handsome-soft. Ages better than the pure pretty boy. Honestly one of the best spots on the board its masculine enough to be taken seriously, soft enough to stay likeable.
Fallen Angel — carried almost entirely by the hair and the eyes. Long, tousled, healthy, non-negotiable. Clean-shaven, high-contrast clothes, slightly romantic styling. Reads almost too good-looking to be real. The long hair polarizes, but it hits hard when it lands.
Prince — good hair, refined features, works on most people. Long structured hair, old-money tailoring, pristine grooming. Nothing loud, everything expensive-looking. Reads like he has his whole life together. Very wide appeal.
Bad Boy — dark hair and features, lean. Dark high-contrast clothes, leather jacket (basically the uniform), light stubble, tousled hair. Edgy but groomed. Reads confident and a little bit trouble — which is the point.
Artist — expressive features, individual taste. Vintage layering, statement outerwear, curated jewelry, expressive hair, grooming a touch undone. Reads like a guy with a point of view. Pulls people who care about personality over polish.
Chad
Genuinely masculine, high dimorphism, but still handsome, not heavy. This is Hollywood-leading-man handsome and it has the widest appeal of anything, across every age. Also the hardest to actually belong to, because it needs the bone structure. If you've got it, this is peak broad attractiveness.
Vampire — pale, angular, high contrast (dark features on light skin), lean. Dark clothes, tailored fits, tousled hair, clean-shaven to show the structure. Sharp and mysterious. Almost nobody can pull it off, which is exactly why it works.
Werewolf — the Vampire's opposite. Where the vampire is pale, smooth, and sharp, the werewolf is warm, rugged, and hairy. Dark features, tan skin, thick messy hair, heavy beard or stubble, visible body hair, muscular but not bodybuilder-huge
Superman — light skin, dark hair, high contrast, naturally muscular. Needs wide clavicles, thick neck, real V-taper, hero jaw. Tight structured basics, clean cut, understated clothes — you let the face and frame talk. Clean-shaven for the jaw. Classic heroic handsome, hardest to earn, highest ceiling.
Jock — Strong jaw, blue eyes, athletic. Tight fits, clean athletic clothes, clean cut. The exact guy people picture when they say "Chad." Broad all-American appeal, rare when every piece lines up.
Casanova — Mediterranean, olive-to-tan, lean. Medium-to-long hair, dark relaxed clothes, and a good stubble that's basically mandatory. Tall-dark-and-handsome, effortless. One of the most reliably attractive looks there is, across every age.
Executive — great skin, sharp features, lean-athletic. Suits and structured clothing are the whole thing. Pristine grooming, slicked or clean cut, clean-shaven or light stubble. Reads competent and in control — "he's got it handled."
Pharaoh — strong dramatic features, rich coloring, athletic. Gorgeous on darker skin and sharp North African / Middle Eastern / Black bone structure. Clean lines, structured pieces, a little gold used sparingly, sharp grooming. Regal and sculpted — a high-drama version of the Chad look.
Hyper Masculine
Tall, muscular, imposing. Where handsome tips into commanding. Reads mature and powerful, so it underperforms with younger crowds and overperforms with people who want that. Tattoos, beards, and size are the whole language.
Aquaman — big frame, dark features, Pacific Islander / heavy-featured. Traditional tattoos, long hair, heavy stubble or beard. The masculine frame plus long hair is a rare, magnetic combo. High appeal precisely because it's niche.
Hypermasc — big frame, very high dimorphism, strong lower third. Buzzcut, tight fits, tattoos. Everything emphasizes size and hardness. Long facial hair.
Outlaw — tall, big but leaner, tattooed. Brown or long hair, leather jacket tattoos
Countryman — rugged, athletic-to-broad, weathered. Denim, workwear, boots, a hat, natural beard. Grounded and traditionally masculine. Big regional appeal.
Extreme size. Bald or shaved, thick beard, huge frame. Built for the gym and for respect, not for broad attraction — it's intimidating and reads low-warmth to most. Its pull is narrow (height, size, dominance) and skews older. If you're naturally here, you're optimizing for presence, not approachability. Know that going in.
Viking — huge, high dimorphism, light-skinned. Very short or very long hair, heavy beard, tattoos optional. Ancient-warrior energy. Commands respect, splits the room on looks.
Bodybuilder — huge, builds muscle easily. Tight fits, mostly athletic wear, tattoos optional. Discipline and size taken to the extreme, which for a lot of people is past "attractive" into "too much." That tension defines the whole tier.
Archetypes for Black guys
The standard version of this list is built around white and East Asian faces and basically skips everyone else, which is dumb because congruence is the whole point. Matching one of these beats forcing a look designed for different raw materials, every time.
ATL / Rapper — the textbook archetype-max. The classic before/after is a forgettable-looking guy who commits to this lane and becomes a different person on the same bone structure. Locs, twists, braids, or a sharp fade with waves. Lined-up beard or goatee. Good denim, layered chains, real sneakers, fits chosen deliberately. Tattoos belong here. Confident posture in photos. Reads high-status and stylish because every single piece tells one story. Broad, current, works.
R&B / Soft Prettyboy — the Black soft-boy lane, warm and romantic. Neat fade or soft natural curls, clean facial hair, fitted knits, silk/satin textures, rich or muted colors, minimal jewelry, spotless skin. The smooth romantic-lead read. Ages up nicely into the handsome band.
Athlete / Prep — clean, understated, the Superman equivalent where the physique carries it. Tight structured basics, athletic cuts, fresh low fade, clean-shaven or short beard. Disciplined and broadly handsome. Ageless, high-trust.
Refined / Old Money — the Prince/Executive lane. Sharp tailoring or elevated smart-casual, immaculate grooming, sculpted facial hair, restrained luxury (a good watch, not stacked chains). Reads sophisticated and ambitious. Works at any height.
Masculine Handsome — the Michael B. Jordan lane. Strong jaw, high dimorphism, muscular. Clean short cut, groomed short beard or clean shave, structured tailoring, fits that show the frame. Classic, powerful, universally handsome. Widest-appealing lane if you've got the bones for it.
High-Fashion / Model — sharp, angular, editorial, arresting. Avant-garde or minimalist high fashion, dramatic silhouettes, sometimes a shaved head to feature the face. Striking but polarizing — like the pale Vampire, being that far past normal can read intimidating instead of warm. Elite in the right room, niche in daily life.
Orgre— same thing as white males
It took very long making this because no other post has this much in-depth to archetypes which I view as the most important section when it comes to looksmaxxing.
