It's simply illogical: why would nature give humans the opportunity to grow even further if recession is considered beautiful? Complete nonsense. There could be many explanations: you said it yourself, they relied on proportions (most likely the golden ratio), but the golden ratio, when it comes to the face, doesn't always mean beauty. Either they didn't yet know that a face could be recessionary and thought what they were creating was ideal. Or they were simply completely confused. If beauty standards are so fickle, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, why are we all trying so hard to improve our appearance to meet these standards?
