I am wondering if the tongue is supposed to perfectly fit into the palate -- like as in the tongue barely touching the teeth when resting it or very close to it. When people examine people from centuries ago when their palates were 50 mm wide and such, did they find that their tongue was growing with it?

the tongue grows appropriately when there is space inside the mouth, not the other way around.
i know this because when you have missing teeth the tongue usually enlarges to cover the area

The tongue stops growing when you reach 18 or so though right

what i described happens in adults aswell

Tongue is genetic, with proper oral posture the palate will expand such that it fits perfectly without touching teeth.
