I would say if you are 15-20% bodyfat, begin a cut, get yourself to a nice super lean state, then do a controlled reversal period where you slowly increase calories back to maintenance, then slowly but surely begin to eat in a calorie surplus.
That's what I have done with my bodybuilding coach recently, shred the fat off and put yourself in a nice position to begin a slow lean bulk, that way you stay looking good pretty much year round, while building some decent mass at a reasonable rate.
This is the best option if you want aesthetics but not roiding at the moment.
