I'm getting braces soon, and the plan is to have all my premolears removed and braces installed. I'm also getting a maxillary widening procedure. Many people on this forum have told me it's better not to remove my premolars, but they've also said that if there's no other solution, they should remove them. What's wrong with removing premolars?

I’m not very well informed on how premolar removal works but please be cautious, I’ve heard lots of shit about them causing/exacerbating chin recession.

When I was in the process of getting my braces, the first ortho wanted me to get premolars extracted and was considering surgery post-extraction. The second, which is the ortho managing my braces rn said extraction and surgery would not be necessary. Do your own research and don’t trust everything they say.

Recession
Unless you have bimaxillary protrusion you're not benefitting from it
Mark as solution

Can you tell me the reasons for your braces? I just don't think I can get by without removing my premolars. There's not enough space for the teeth, so my teeth are crowded.

Are you saying this as a 100% event after premolar extraction or as a possible event?

Almost 100%
I think you're wrong. Almost 80 percent of clinical cases involve premalear removal, and people do well. I think it's my fault for not sharing my case in detail. I have crowded teeth, meaning there isn't enough room in my jaw for all my teeth. My dentist recommended removing my premolars to make room for the others. Then the braces will fill the empty spaces with the remaining teeth. This means the entire surface of the jaw arch will be used. As I know, recession occurs when a tooth is missing from a certain part of the jaw arch, and in my case, it will all be filled with the remaining teeth. Please, now that you know my clinical situation, can you give me your assessment?

Why extract if not enough space? Why not widen so theres more space?

Sorry, I expressed myself incorrectly. I'm going to have my upper jaw widened, but even so, it wouldn't provide enough space, and that will be done once I'm wearing braces.

My father had them removed and his chin is recessed. I dont have chin recession. Wish you the best of luck after having them removed

Bro, your dad's chin was probably already recessed. Braces and premolar extractions themselves don't affect bone structure. Gum recession is discussed here.
