What's the deal with Halloween parties?

Do grown-ups actually go in America to parties dressed as vampires, mummies, monsters, mutants, etc., seems pretty childish, we had some costumed parties in kindergarten and junior school, so the parents would amuse themselves seeing us dressed as dwarfs, gnomes, fairies, etc., but after puberty no self-respecting teen would be caught dead wearing a silly costume, what's the deal with US?
