Why do curries refuse to wash their hands

When i went out with my curry friends for lunch the food was in a tray without any spoon and forks so you had to eat with ur hands (the traditional arab way).

But they just flat out refused and told me 'no it's okay you can wash if you want'.

is it a taboo to wash your hands in india? @Gengar

it's a tradition in india they do this so they can have a little snack later in the dday
