Some years ago I was given this small task to make a ELD(Electronic Logging Device system for drivers). My boss gave me all the compliance paper work, but only mentioned to make sure that I meet and assume these three things Property carrying drivers, 70hrs/8days, no adverse driving conditions and Fueling at least once every 1,000 miles and 1 hour for pickup and drop off those were the only constraints he gave me he didnt mention anything else but gave me the documents to study anyway
And I found a mountain of edge cases. Short haul exceptions, state specific highway limits etc etc.
Even the damn log book wasnt standardized it was just the grid inside. I found multiple different variations for the same thing
And to make things worse I wasn't a US citizen so every time I tried to acces to Department of Transportation (DOT) documents I would get the dreaded 403 Forbidden, try clicking on this link if you are not from the US you'll get a 403
I was overwhelmed by all this and Instead of clarifying the scope, my intern ego took over. Hell no I am not asking no one, I'm here to prove my worth, im not playing around I not like those other interns i will prove that I am elite by covering every single rabbit hole I found. I was only given a week and told to spend not more 20 something work hours on the task but did I listen no. It was a ego think now
I spent multiple hours churning out 2,000 lines of code building a repo that handled every obscure edge case. Just put the pickup, drop, fill in the details and it gives you all the ready made day wise logs, the fuel stop, the rest stops all of which comply with the 14 hour rules and every legal limit and every edge case. I submitted it with immense pride, expecting a standing ovation for my thoroughness.
Instead my boss called me into his office and scolded me. He told me he needed a simple internal tool for planning purposes. I never told you to build a full-scale ELD logging suite. By over delivering you have created a Frankenstein that is a nightmare to maintain, a single law changes in any state and this entire breaks. He ordered me to comment out everything and keep only the three constraints he initially requested. He also joked to me saying. Jason, you really think dem' country folk gonna spend time filling out all this. Who were you even building this for son? This looks more like tax returns form, please don't focus on better things to do. You already stressed me out on a Monday morning.
