You are treating consciousness like a body's function but the argument can be made that before we are aware there's no body. Consciousness has really serious implications. Here's what Sam Harris says about the structure of the brain and awareness, btw he is an atheist:

For any experience to be there, first you must be aware. I guess it's not so far fetched from this to conclude that consciousness is the real basis and not the physical universe.
