You are treating consciousness like a body's function but the argument can be made that before we are aware there's no body. Consciousness has really serious implications. Here's what Sam Harris says about the structure of the brain and awareness, btw he is an atheist:

"Absolutely nothing about a brain, when surveyed as a physical system, suggests that it is a locus of experience. Were we not already brimming with consciousness ourselves, we would find no evidence of it in the physical universe—nor would we have any notion of the many experiential states that it gives rise to. For any experience to be there, first you must be aware. I guess it's not so far fetched from this to conclude that consciousness is the real basis and not the physical universe. In real life situation the implications are insane. Awareness offers the sole "ground" when really intense experiences occur.

The point of life is dopamine. The notifications, the Vidya, the porn, the status, cars, money, thrills, likes, retweets. It's always the dopamine that keeps us going

I don't believe in established religions, but I'd bet there are higher states of existence. Humans looking for "proof" are making the assumption that our 5 senses are every sense there is. Someone born deaf can't comprehend what sound is. In the same way, there may be things about the universe we don't have the receptors (senses) to detect or even comprehend.

Also, you're already living in an "afterlife". Your consciousness already came from nothing. So why can't that happen again? Why do people assume when you die the atoms can't align to make you again? It already happened.
