I’ve been chewing for like 30-1hr with 4 pieces of mastic gum for a few days. So today, to do progressive overload, I upped it to 2 hours.
I think I unconsciously chewed more with left side, but now my left masseter feels tight as hell despite so much massaging, and any movement of the jaw causes pain, opening the jaw, biting, smiling,

The pain comes from the very top right corner of the masseter, right under the cheekbone, towards the nose not the ear.
I don’t know if it’s the masseter or tmj that’s in pain

Does anyone have any solutions?

That's an overuse injury/strain, the only solution is to wait and to take a step back from your training while it recovers. I would only really go as far as doing 30 minutes a day, 2 hours is a bit overkill ngl

Massage with some oil bro, if it’s TMJ you’re fucked for life.

I don’t support chewing tbh makes you less symmetrical

How would u progressively overload then

So u reckon I didn’t get tmj?

i mean u can control it reasonably well if your smart and can actually reverse some asymmetry that was caused unknowingly

yeah idk why ur tryna get the andrewmaxxer jawline but its likely a strain rather than tmj, if it still hurts after 2 days or so actually go to a doctor

Not necessarily tbh. I got it from chewing too but it went away, it rarely comes back once in a while but then it goes away on its own so depends

Take a break until you are sure it's healed and start with small time again, don't panic:feelsokman:

I chewed for bigger masseters and fix masseter asymmetry

Unless you feel like your jaw is out of place, your TMJ is likely fine, just really, take it easy on chewing, even food.

How would you progressively overload? Either getting stronger gum or using a jaw trainer with different resistance profiles. You can only add so much time to your chewing before stuff like this happens.

Think of it like doing a bicep curl, and add one rep each day, your biceps may grow, but if you're doing it daily, for many reps, your bicep tendons are gonna eventually give up on you.

How often should I add load? What frequency? Should I take rest days

Also I’m already gotten to using 4 mastic gum

Should I use even more mastic gum?

Should I keep massaging where it hurts?

Try heroin (in Minecraft ofc)

How often to add load? Ngl I have no idea. But I'll tell you this:
1. Try to keep the sessions shorter than 45 minutes and avoid overextending the movement, a range of motion which is way too big is just going to give you bigger chances of injury
2. You should absolutely take rest when it comes to chewing, specially when it's high frequency, potentially twice a day. I would do it every other day as a maximum.
3. Mastic gum can work, however there are other options if you need more resistance.

But really, don't take chewing exercises too seriously, they can help you if you need a tiny boost to your jaw, or you're below 16 (due to ramus development, it's a tiny effect though). But other than that, it's a very low priority, are you even lean enough in the first place?

I’m mainly doing it to fix masseter asymmetry, which is also part of a bigger asymmetry issue (like for example on side of my teeth I can’t really feel my molars touching, and that side is less developed with smaller masseter)

Also my head, especially the sides, hurt as well, is that normal

No, I’m not that lean

Also I’m trying to chew (with molars) to reverse effects of chewing with Incisors which fucked up my lips and philthrum (flattened and shortened philthrum, lips lost projection)

and whats the good way to do it ? whats the way you are doing it ?
Falim or mastic gum

Chew with masticular pattern (chew forward and up)

Chew with molars and occasional pre molars

Chew bilaterally (equally on both sides)

massage masseters after every chewing session

Do high frequency, low volume (like 15-40 minutes a day), and then also take rest days, like 2 days a week, to allow for recovery

bro don't panic, stop the chewing, give it a few weeks, it will hopefully just go away.

i had some temporary tmj from thumbpulling, was not fun but it went away in a couple of weeks.

for the love of god don't chew even more.

Larger masseters (wider jaw), might stretch skin so leaner face, looks aesthetic if insertions are good and you are lean

Might put pressure on the ramus to grow longer over time

Food should be fine right? Should I eat soft food?

i tought masseter hypertrophy and bruxism isnt a good thing to have?

Masseter hypertrophy and bruxism are two different things. One is an orthodontic issue as a result of clenching and grinding teeth and the other one is just increasing muscle size in the jaw muscles

idk what caused the pain, but i was thumbpulling in the weeks before. i stopped thumbpulling and it went away, so i reasonably assumed it was the pulling. as to how, i have no idea, im not a forum genius.

food should be ok. normal use of your jaw should be ok, just don't do stupid things like open it really for no reason or put further unnecessary stress on it (yes, chewing mastic gum counts as unnecessary).

Did you start thumbpulling after again when it went away? Can I start chewing mastic gum again after it goes away but more carefully?

nah, i'm come to the realisation that my side profile is cooked because east asian maxilla and ramus. i've not gone back to thumbpulling. i wear a retainer anyway so I doubt the pulling will do anything effective.

better off trying to compensate in other departments, or learning how to fraud side profile more effectively.

i dont really notice it anymore (although i rarely chew anything hard, especially hard gum), but it was pretty annoying during the time. It definitely persisted for at least a year; not necessarily painful but I would hear & feel my jaw click if I ate something hard/chewy like a steak. Deffo should weigh up the risks doing something like this, considering you are risking yourself looking like uncanny valley anyway

Just completely stop for now if you are having issues
