Mirin hard bhai, then you’re my senpai. What subject do you teach?

Unfortunately, I’m under strict supervision, I don’t have the freedom to just chill. Maybe once I become licensed.

English Lang/ Lit

I came out here just before COVID, n then got a job at an international school due to everyone leaving the country, then current job due to nepotism, n just sign a contract for an international school due to prior exp at an international school

(I actually have a solid CV n took on a managerial role during COVID as a way to heavily boost CV n pay was good + created multiple entire curricula from scratch n achieved solid grades for students in International Baccalaureate/ Cambridge Qualifications/ Chinese Govt exams, amongst other shit)

Sounds like you got hired because you’re a native speaker. There are programs that help with that, but unfortunately, I’m not a native speaker. I intend to work at schools in the country. Maybe you can help @optimisticzoomer, he’s gotten job offers in Thailand and China, he’s looking for a good gig in China. I need to get my bachelor’s in Education before I can become a licensed teacher. I had American students in my university who were surprised by the workload given to us, they said that first year students in the Netherlands are being taught what they are taught in their final years. What grades have you taught so far?

They will hire non-native speakers for subject classes (science, maths) etc out here

but yeah being native speaker was a big help + I have an Eng Lit undergrad and an MSc

Yeah I know a few people who do this job

There are quite a few very chill positions - you do like 5 - 8hrs of teaching per week and make 9,000RMB+ with a free 1 bedroom apt on site. A lot of people do it for the huge amount of free time and long university holidays

Honestly, that's quite a lot of teaching for 10K RMB a month, I'd say you got a bad deal here

These are a couple of decent sites, but there are many more ofc

In the job I'm going to: I will have 17 - 18 teaching hours per week, be making just over 35K RMB a month with an on-site dorm room. I'll probably rent an apartment for myself nearby though

It’s not
I looked at echinacities
Very few have less than 14 hours, and the ones paying more are in big cities or require experience
Mine is a tier 4 city and I have no masters or experience

Ahhhh, that makes more sense

tbh since COVID the requirements for these jobs have increased and the pay has stabilised or come down a bit in a lot of places - If you're in a tier 4 city the rent should be dirt cheap. Have you looked at apartments or are you gonna live on-campus?

DM me if you want some help with things like getting decent SIM card/ phone plan, APPs you should download or any other questions

Apartment on campus

Apartment on campus
It's up to you, but this is Anyang which is a tier 4 city in Henan

3 bedroom apartments for about 1400rmb on average, you could probably score a 2 bedroom for 1-1.2k a month if you wanted, would probably be about 2K with bills n maintenance fee - I assume the contract they gave you doesn't contain a housing allowance since they already provide you somewhere on campus

Renting in China is dirt cheap tbh - I have a 4 bedroom apartment to myself near the city centre of my city for 3.5k rmb, and I'm about 1.5 hours from Hong Kong and and the same from Macau door to door

Once you have a couple of years of experience you could increase ur earnings significantly or get access to jobs with better contract conditions easy

I’ll probably see how the apartment is first
Means no commute too
Where did you first go in China? I’ll be like one of the only foreigners in my city and am trying to learn mandarin but obviously a total noob

Also a bit nervous about teaching uni students. At least with kids you feel like you have authority/theyre not judging you, and with paying adults at least they wanna be there. I turned down training centres tho cos I wanted a uni job

I first went to Foshan and I'm still here until August, when I move to Suzhou. I agree with the commuting thing, but what's great about living here is that you can almost always find a good place to live within 10 minutes of where you work. Right now I live 1.5km from my workplace.

Basic spoken Mandarin is actually pretty easy - it's very simple grammatically and you don't need a great deal of vocab for day to day shit. Reading and writing is brutal though, I haven't even bothered with that shit lmao

I wouldn't worry about it, just be professional and amicable - the students will most likely be pretty chill. I have no idea how big your classes will be since ur at uni though, its not something I've ever done myself

It’s easy until you’re trying to understand what someone is saying at natural pace

Writing is pretty pointless, but reading seems important for things like looking at products in a supermarket, signs etc. You can just use a lens translator but seems better to learn

30-60 students I believe. “Oral English teacher”

ha, that was the first kind of job I had here

Oral English teacher at a primary school for 40 - 50 students per class, can't say I miss it

tbh, WeChat's translation service is all I've ever needed. You can learn if you want but it's gonna take quite awhile - the university probably offers free lessons if you ask, or they will be very cheap

It's dead easy, just not very fulfilling tbh - Idk what a university setting will be like though

Idk what you know about living here but there's a bunch of stuff you'll need to get setup/ want to do for living in China, I really recommend asking the university if they have someone who can help you out in-person with all of that

Decent n cheap VPN (I can help you with this)
Getting your bank card sorted ASAP and linking it to all the APPs you'll most likely use regularly, plus adding ur address
Getting the tax APP downloaded and installed is pretty useful/ important (All foreigners are eligible for a tax rebate + 4K RMB for each parent over the age of 65)
Getting a remittance APP set up for when you wanna send money home easily (I use Sky Remit)
Buying an e-bike (2 - 5k RMB)

Here are the APPs I use regularly

I've taught everything from grade 2 to 11, but most of my experience is in middle school years
