This guy has a long midface and still looks pretty good, some people just associate a long midface with recession/downwards growth when this isn't always the case imo. Some men can get away with slightly longer midfaces, it all depends on your facial harmony, although having compact midface may be most ideal.

It depends. Imo so long as you're in the normal range it isn't a death sentence and even outside the normal range there are cases where the dude looks good anyway (Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Adam Driver).
However usually a more compact midface would be an improvement to the face. However in some cases (DiCaprio) a longer midface would actually be an improvement to the face. It isn't a black and white issue but shorter = better is a useful simplification.
