Being you and being confident worked decades ago, when there was no internet and so much information, but instead everyone lived in relatively limited communities and bubbles, where the number of women and males was limited, so hot chicks were more likely to accept uglier guys, due to lack of options + social pressure.

If you back then as an ugly guy also had a good job, and were confident in yourself, 95% of the job was done.
