reach Game of Thrones status.

I've read comments from people who absolutely hated One Piece not just because of 4kids' voice acting and toned-down violence,

hated the goofy character designs and overall wackiness (which 4kids had nothing to do with).

One Piece in its early arcs didn't exactly emphasize on macho men, busty women, and cool battles,

which can be fixed if the cgi / fight scenes are movie quality.
I've read comments of people saying they hate the design.

Example:
I hate the art. I tried, I own the first 14 volumes and just hated the artwork. It has its moments , but characters that look like noodles, or giant egg shaped body's with their mouth bigger than their face. I can't go a chapter or two with out seeing something that looks goofy or whack.

Knowing Netflix they are going to hire a black transgender woman to play Luffy, and Zorro will be a gay curry

Anyone who watches One Piece shouldn't bitch about that.

Oda himself said that the crew doesn't reflect Japanese people.

Tldr
One piece not being globally successful could have something to do with

it's character design not being well received by Normies.

Netflix's version of the series could boost it's popularity (if done correctly)

Why it's unpopular in the US?

Bad distribution (in the US and Canada at least). 4kids got a hold of it and gutted it. Mix that with the cartoony art style, and the fact that back then anime wasn't taken very

seriously as a medium, and you've got a recipe for disaster. Bleach and Naruto at least had their styles going for them making them look darker and grittier, which offset

the bad reputation anime had for being for kids. Plus they both had good beginnings that caught your attention, while OP had a slower buildup and took a little while to get

going. And One Piece is an anime that hides its darker grittier depths behind a cheerful cartoony surface. Plus 4kids heavily censored it. So it didn't appeal to people in

the west. Now that Bleach has gotten shittier, Naruto is over, and OP has a good dub going, OP has been getting more

attention. Plus people now are much more willing to read manga/watch subs than they were back then.
