Why do people hate horror movies so much?

So let me preface that I absolutely love horror, it’s probably my favourite genre after crime thrillers. I especially like paranormal, but enjoy watching other subgenres too

But as for other people… they almost always seem to hate it? Like out of 10 people I mention my affinity toward horror 8 are repulsed, 1 is neutral and 1 likes it

I had multiple times when I was with girls and me wanting to put on a horror film completely killed their vibe

At this point I kinda get a dopamine rush whenever I manage to find someone who enjoys watching them like me

I like horror movies because I find them to be much more serious and dramatic compared to other genres

The tension, suspense, stakes, risks, and consequences etc

I don’t get scared, I just like the tension of how the characters deal with those kind of situations.

I love it and my ex hated it. She said they gave her nightmares. She thought I was a weird person wanting to fill my head with such horrible stuff and generally got mad when I talked about how I like horror

And a lot of women I have met also don’t like horror or roll their eyes when I say I want to watch a horror or just simply a mind fuck type movie

I hate comedies for the most part and don’t find typical super hero movies interesting because they are too cliche where the good guy wins.

Then I’ve met women who claim they like horror and yet when it comes to actually watching with me they don’t seem interested or want to watch the ones I want. I will watch even very lesser known ones or especially found footage type. I like those

There’s only one girl I ever met as into horror as me and I think she was my soulmate we got along so well. I shouldn’t have broken up with her

What I love about horror movies is (if they are done right) bring me closer to the characters and the settings than other genres, it feels lot more personal. Fear is very subjective, hence hard to hit the right spot, but when they do it elevates the experiment to another level

Another aspect I like is the limitlessness. In every other genre other than cartoons, the rules of reality apply more or less. But in horror nothing is off limits or taboo

A lot of horror movies are not well made. I like the ones that have a thriller element like some of the Jordan peele films, The Babadook, parasite etc. movies like scream are what brings the genre down for me

Horror movies are great to watch while I'm plucking my asshole hairs, my favourite snack to eat while watching them is a stick of butter and raw beef brains

A lot of horror movies rely way too much on jumpscares, which is akin to a comedian tickling people. People also don't really like the feeling of not knowing whats going on and being afraid watching a movie, entertainment is supposed to be an escape.

Big horror movie fan here, I keep track of everything I have watched. Counter is past 500. Could have gotten a lot higher but I have been going months without watching a horror movie. I'm about to watch Terrifier 2. I watched Terrifier a few days ago.

Mirin amnesia, I didn't know you liked horror movies as well. Found footage horror used to be one of my favorites, along with slashers. Right now my favorite horror movies are Japanese horror movies. If you're open to watching Japanese horror movies I could get you some links with English subtitles included. Difference between western horror movies and Japanese horror movies is day and night. Former uses jump scare tactics often which I find annoying rather than scary, latter tends to build up the tension to the point the movie stays with you long after the credits have rolled by.

Hereditary was nice but overrated as well, not a fan of those artsy fartsy horror movies. I used to post a lot on r/horror and people had hard-ons for such movies. Which was very off-putting.

I watched A Serbian Film when I was a teenager. Bleak stuff. As for Guinea Pig, not a fan of such type of movies but I can stomach them of course. It's just I'd rather watch a horror movie with an actual plot rather than just gore.

Western horror movies rely on jump scares, that's the reason why I have completely stopped watching them with the exception of a few. If you want horror movies with suspense and no jump scares, I suggest Japanese horror movies. I like how there's a lot of moments where they could set up a typical in-your-face jump scare but they don't do that. You know what I'm talking about, for instance a scene looking through a keyhole. In a western horror movie, it'd be a jump scare, but in a Japanese horror movie, it's just done for tension building and you won't see a jump scare.

There are a lot, so I'm going to name some of the most popular.

Ju-on (This was remade as The Grudge)
Ringu (This was remade as The Ring)

There's also Thai horror and South Korean horror but they, ESPECIALLY Thai horror, rely way too much on jump scares as well. But Shutter is a good example that you could watch.

qft. Horror can do everything all other genres are limited by and still add more. On top of having the most atmosphere. If anything comedies are more disgusting than anything horror can do.

OP might as well be asking why normies have normie taste as normie extends into all aspects of society.

French and Japanese horror is where it's at.

Martyrs will fuck you up.

Last horror I saw was Threads, about living in post-MAD fallout because jfl at your other worse scenarios. Nukes are always scarier.

As morbid as this may sound, I’ll go ahead and say it. The reason I don’t particularly like snuff movies is because of the abundance of real world gore footage on the internet (like cartel killings, war footage). The snuff movies became redundant for me ever since I got to know real gore videos are so abundant

It’s a fucked up world but whatever

Sounds interesting, I thought I had already seen the "most disturbing movie" haha ("A Serbian Film", "Martyrs"). As for I Spit On Your Grave, there's 2 versions: an original from 1978 and a remake from 2010. Which would you prefer to watch?

I really like Art’s character because it’s finally a clown that actually behaves and acts like a clown. Not just an evil dude who happens to wear a clown costume (looking at you IT)

I haven’t yet. Lately I’ve been actively watching horror movies that have non-American and folk elements

Stuff like

Midsommar (Swedish)
LaLorona (Mexican)
Post Mortem (Hungarian)
His House (Sudanese)
Noroi (Japanese)
etc.

+ my plan for 2023 is to delve into the Japanese horror rabbithole, so far I’ve only stratched it’s surface but I’ve heard there’s a lot in there

Hold up, a Sudanese horror movie? Did I read that correctly? Them African mfers have horror movies too? Color me surprised.

And Noroi is awesome, I'm glad you already watched it. Yeah, there's a shit ton of J-horror movies. Even the B-type of horror movies of Japanese stock are good haha. I've watched a lot of j-horror.

Actually a British movie, it shows the story of a Sudanese guy and girl escaping from their home in Africa as refugees to the UK. And they bring something with them to their new home from their old home without knowing :feelsshh:

I really enjoyed it, haven’t seen a horror movie with African elements in it before, it was refreshing to watch

I love how diverse Japanese yurei are in Japanese mythology, and in horror movies. All antagonists seem to be very unique both in their appearance and their motives, back story etc. I feel like Western demons are mostly made to look and behave the same (even though they could be made more diverse too, there’s a lot of them in Christian mythology)

Yeah I was surprised haha, I know about Sudan as a nation. And that sounds like an interesting premise though I have watched movies with a similar premise before haha.

And yeah there';s a lot of diversity when it comes to yurei. Though despite yurei being a part of Japanese lore for centuries, they didn't get featured into any movie until 1998, with the release of Ringu.

And that too was a last-minute intervention by the director, originally they were gonna go with something else, not a visible entity but rather an unseen one. He did extremely well because so many horror movies have copied him and now the "long black-haired female spectre" is a common trope in horror movies.

Victorian horror movies will always be the best, they have everything to make the setting creepy

Did you see the the 1989 version or the one starring Daniel Radcliffe?

@TRUE_CEL have you seen X?

Also terrifier looks like low budget shit, exactly the reason why people think horror is trash

Last gf couldn't even watch a basic thriller or action movie. Too intense for her or smth

splatter / gore even more because they are bitches who have never had any real hardship in their life so they get shocked when they aknowledge that the world is not flowers and rainbows
