are there pauses in growth spurts?

I grew a bit a few months ago and then had knee and shin pain inbetween that time, until now when I grew a centimeter this week. the doctor said that I might either still be growing or my knee pain might be caused by my growth plates closing which I've never heard of.

please tell me if the growth plates closing could cause knee and shin pain, also a bit in my quad close to my knee or if there can be pauses in growth spurts
